Spiritual Gifts and the New Testament

In Echo Bodine’s book “The Gift, Understand and Develop Your Psychic Abilities”, the psychic medium and hands on healer writes about how some of her students are worried about the gifts given to them and how it may interfere with their religious beliefs. Echo researched the bible and found many verses relating to the God given gift of psychic abilities and healing. The best verses relating to these gifts are found in Paul’s letters to the Corinthians describing the gifts of the spirit that God has given to all of us.

1 Corinthians 12, New Living Translation Bible

1 And now, dear brothers and sisters, I will write about the special abilities the Holy Spirit gives to each of us, for I must correct your misunderstandings about them. 4 Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving. 6 There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another he gives the gift of special knowledge. 9 The Spirit gives special faith to another, and to someone else he gives the power to heal the sick. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and to another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to know whether it is really the Spirit of God or another spirit that is speaking. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, and another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. 27 Now all of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it. 28 Here is a list of some of the members that God has placed in the body of Christ: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who can get others to work together, those who speak in unknown languages.

1 Corinthians 14

1. Let love be your highest goal, but also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy.3 But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord, encouraging and comforting them.5 I wish you all had the gift of speaking in tongues, but even more I wish you were all able to prophesy. For prophecy is a greater and more useful gift than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church can get some good out of it.22 So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for the benefit of believers, not unbelievers.

John 14: 10–14, New International Version

10 "Don't you believe that I am in the Father? Don't you believe that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. The Father lives in me. He is the One who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say I am in the Father. Also believe that the Father is in me. Or at least believe what the miracles show about me.  12 "What I'm about to tell you is true. Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. In fact, he will  do even greater things. That is because I am going to the Father. 13 "And I will do anything you ask in my name. Then the Son will bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name. I will do it.

A Prophet is despised

Mark 6: 1-6
“1 And going out from there, he went into his own county; and his disciples followed him. 2 And when the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue; and many hearing him were in admiration at his doctrine saying: How came this man by all these things? And what wisdom is this that is given to him, and such mighty works as are wrought by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? Are not also his sisters here with us? And they were scandalized in regard of him. 4 And Jesus said to them: A prophet is despised in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred. 5 And he could not do any miracles there, only that he cured a few that were sick, laying his hands upon them. 6 And he wondered because of their unbelief, and he went through the villages round about teaching.

Gospel of Thomas 31

(31) Jesus said, "No prophet is accepted in his own village; no physician heals those who know him."
